The Costume Commission is interested in what students had to share with the rest of the membership in our continued evolvement into the 21st century. That’s one of the reasons SLI was created.
Why Leadership? The Apple Dictionary’s definition includes the following descriptions: "Leadership noun: GUIDANCE, direction, control, management, superintendence, supervision; organization, government."
Why Initiative? Merriam Webster describes this word as “Noun: an introductory step… energy or aptitude displayed in initiation of action : enterprise, and an act or strategy intended to resolve a difficulty or improve a situation; a fresh approach to something.”
What’s our mission? Commissioner Donna Meester’s explains: “It has been becoming more and more apparent that the costume commission is getting younger; every year we see more new student members. Many of these students have asked how they can become more involved, especially when it comes to presenting. Since we do our programming a year in advance, it is virtually impossible for most of them to know if they will be able to attend the next conference or even what they would present. By having a student dedicated session in the schedule, they will have the opportunity to plan ahead and to apply to present at a much later date.”
What are we looking for? We are interested in what the student have to say in regards to new approaches; use of non-traditional materials, green initiatives, digital software for theatrical use, updating costume design and technology related operations, etc.
I am very excited to direct this project and I look forward to adding the student voices to our process. As a first generation college student and as an educator, I have relied upon cross-cultural communication and collaboration to expand my career --the cross-cultural part also refers to the different design-tech disciplines! In my scholarly research I am committed to exploring new ways of collaborating using 21st century technology in theater and film. As a teacher I have been humbled by the amount of innovation and expertise students can bring to this process.
