Tech Olympics

The Tech Olympics returns to USITT's Conference & Stage expo in Fort Worth. This popular competition is designed to challenge student members in the various disciplines involved in the theatre production. Teams or individuals are challenged in management, lighting, audio, costumes, props and rigging.

Tech Olympic Events

Costume Change - Team
Area: Costume    
Team Size:2        
Maximum time allowed to complete the event: 5:00
General Description: A team of two participants will direct an actor through a quick change of costumes, while maintaining decorum and organization.
Ideal Space Requirements:  20' x 20' square area with only one side accessible by observers.  One break in the observer side to allow access for participants.  No electricity needed.
 
Focus a Lighting Instrument - Solo
Area: Lighting     
Team Size:1        
Maximum time allowed to complete the event: 4:00
General Description: The participant will focus two pre-hung instruments to a set of given shapes.  At the discretion of the adjudicators, following adjudication of this activity, the same participant will "strike" the lighting instruments back to their starting positions.
Ideal Space Requirements:  30' x 40' rectangular area, one side of which must be a wall onto which items can be attached with tape.  The other three sides may be accessible to observers, and there must be one break in the side opposite the wall to allow access for participants.  One dedicated 20 amp electrical circuit is required.
 
Strike and Set Up Props - Team

Maximum time allowed to complete the event: 5:00
General Description: A team of two participants will strike existing props from a given on-stage table to a marked prop table, and then take a different set of props from the prop table and set them up properly onstage.
Ideal Space Requirements:  20' x 20' square area with only one side accessible by observers.  One break in the observer side to allow access for participants.  No electricity needed.  This event should be in the quietest area of the room, so that small noises can be heard by the adjudicators.  Under no circumstances should this even be near the sound or lighting events.
 
Knot Tying 1 - Bowline/Clove/Butterfly
Area: Rigging       
Team Size:1        
Maximum time allowed to complete the event: 5:00
General Description: The participant must correctly demonstrate their ability to tie three knots; A clove hitch with two half hitches, a bowline around an object, and a butterfly knot.
Ideal Space Requirements:  20' x 20' square area.  Any and all sides may be open to observers.  One side must contain a break to allow access for participants.  No electricity needed.


Sound System Setup - Solo
Area: Sound        
Team Size:1        
Maximum time allowed to complete the event: 5:00
General Description: The participant must successfully set up a simple sound system to supply signal to a set of standard speakers from two separate sources - one playback source and one microphone.
Ideal Space Requirements:  30' x 40' rectangular area, with only one side accessible by observers.  One break in the observer side to allow access for participants.  One dedicated 20 amp electrical circuit is required.
 
Tape a Ground Plan/Laying out a Floor Plan
Area: Stage Management 
Team Size:2        
Maximum time allowed to complete the event: 5:00
General Description: A team of two participants must accurately tape out a ground plan in a pre-marked area using various spike tapes provided to them.
Ideal Space Requirements:  30' x 40' rectangular area, with only one side accessible by observers.  One break in the observer side to allow access for participants.  No electricity needed.  Hard surface floor to which tape can be applied and removed.  This event should be in the quietest area of the room, so that team members can communicate clearly.  Under no circumstances should this even be near the sound or lighting events.
