Awards for Young Designers & Technicians in the Performing Arts, known throughout USITT as the YD&T Awards, bring recognition and support to young designers and technicians at the beginning of their careers. Overview

This page provides detailed instructions for those who wish to be considered for a YD&T award. First, you must be nominated by a member of USITT and be a member yourself. Second, you must register at the YD&T Registration Page : you will need to select the award you seek, identify your nominator and pay a $25 registration fee. The third and final step is the portfolio submission and upload process.

The USITT office will process your registration within a few days. After your payment is collected and your membership is verified you will be sent a registration approval by e-mail. That e-mail will contain your username, password, and instructions for accessing your portfolio submission page. You must submit your portfolio by December 8, 2008.

Your portfolio will include further information about you and your nominator as well as various supporting images and documents. Every portfolio must include your resume, a letter of nomination, and two additional letters of recommendation. You must also include a one page letter from the nominee stating his/her creative working philosophy. In addition a 150 word design concept statement for each submitted design. Further requirements and acceptable file formats for supporting documents vary from award to award and are described in detail below. You will upload these supporting documents as part of the portfolio submission process. Please note that, for all the awards, uploaded file formats are limited to:

  • Microsoft Word Document (.doc)
  • Image files in .jpg format
  • Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet (.xls)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt)
  • Adobe PDF files (.pdf)
  • Sound files in .mp3 format
  • Files submitted in other formats will not be considered for review!

Award recipients will receive a complimentary conference registration to USITT's 2009 Annual Conference & Stage Expo in Cincinnati, OH, plus cash awards of $500 to $2,000. These awards are made possible by generous gifts through their sponsors to the USITT New Century Fund.

Summary of Requirements

Submissions must include:

  • Registration form with $25 entry fee
  • Nominee’s resume
  • Nominator recommendation, citing examples of work as specified for the award
  • Two additional letters of recommendation in support of the nomination.
  • A sample portfolio of nominee’s work and additional materials as specified for each award.
  • One page letter from nominee stating his/her creative working philosophy. In addition, a 150 word concept statement for each submitted design.

Eligibility

  • You must be nominated by a member in good standing of USITT: to register you will be asked for the nominator’s name, e-mail, USITT member number and USITT member type. (Students may not nominate themselves or other student members)
  • You must be a member in good standing of USITT and provide your membership number and type.
  • See individual awards for specific educational requirements.
  • You must submit a registration form and entry fee of $25. (If you would like to submit for more than one award you will be required to submit an additional registration and an additional entry fee.)
  • You are required to use the on-line registration form and to provide documentation of your work in digital format. Acceptable file formats are: .doc, .jpg, .xls, .ppt, .pdf, .mp3.

KM Fabrics, Inc. Technical Production Award

  • Nominees must be completing or have completed a graduate degree within the last two years.
  • Sample portfolio may be up to three productions each, including up to five digital images of nominee's work. Each example may be an image, an MS-word document, a PDF document or a spreadsheet. Each example may include associated supplementary materials not to exceed a 50 word description of the example. The material should demonstrate excellence in areas such as:
    • Construction
    • Drafting
    • Computer applications
    • Effective use of resources
    • Research
    • Rigging
    • Engineering
    • Personnel management

Acceptable formats include .doc, .jpg, .xls, .ppt, .pdf, .mp3.

Robert E. Cohen Sound Achievement Award

  • Nominees must be completing or have completed a graduate degree within the last two years.
  • Include sample portfolio of nominee's work.
  • The concept statement described above should include a description of the design process and execution of the project.
  • Sound Design Portfolios must include five to ten .mp3 audio files (128Kb/sec preferred). The combined length for all audio files must not exceed five minutes in duration. Audio files must be accompanied by five to ten visual images in .pdf or .jpg format of corresponding scenes.
  • The portfolio must include a Table of Contents as a 'Supporting Document. This Table of Contents should list all the uploaded files in the portfolio and the purpose of each.
  • Examples of paperwork associated with your design should also be included as 'Supporting Documents'. You may provide between two and ten paperwork examples.
  • Supporting Documents may be in .doc, .xls or .pdf format. There must be at least three (the Table of Contents and two paperwork examples). There may be as many as twelve.
  • These materials should demonstrate excellence in areas such as:
    • Sound design
    • System engineering
    • Editing
    • Effective use of resources
    • Reinforcement
    • Recording
    • Research

USITT Lighting Design Award
