POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES: The New York City College of Technology, Department of Entertainment Technology invites applications for a tenure-track, full-time position as Technical Director at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning in September, 2009. The department has a record of consistent growth and seeks individuals with high energy and motivation to join a world-class team of eight industry-recognized faculty members.

The department offers undergraduate instruction in a variety of disciplines, including technical direction, lighting, sound, show control, music technology, and video systems. New programs in development include interactive control, digital media, video production and emerging media technology. Students are expected to enhance their educational experience in the department with outside activities, including internships and freelance work, in NYC. Based on our effective education in many entertainment disciplines, our graduates are employed throughout the country.

Facilities include 40,000 square feet of training facilities, with state-of-the-art shops, a newly updated 10-station welding lab, a dedicated 200 seat theatre, a video production studio, and a variety of small high tech spaces. A new 1200 seat college theater is being designed and built. Equipment inventory worth over 2.5 million dollars allows students to experiment with many different components and systems. The department receives support from a number of industry partners, who help maintain currency of technology. In addition, the candidate will have the opportunity to develop access to 3-Axis CNC machining centers, laser cutters, CNC routers, water jet cutters, and three-dimensional prototyping equipment housed in sister departments in the School of Technology and Design.

The successful candidate will teach courses in several areas including but not limited to Technical Direction, Scenery Construction, CAD, Welding, Technical Production, Rigging, Introduction to Entertainment Technology, and Health and Safety. The candidate will also be expected to develop curricula related to the Technical Direction track, and work to nurture relationships with other departments in the School of Technology and Design. Of particular interest is the development of curricula that support the use of modern CNC and other fabrication technologies, and the incorporation of digital media and mechanical automation in scenic structures. The Technical Director coordinates all production activities in the theatre and scene shop related to the drafting and construction of scenery props, and scenic assignments for a large student crew; and is responsible for supervising one full-time master carpenter and student employees. S/he is additionally expected to pursue scholarly activities at a high level, helping to advance the state of the art.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: MFP or equivalent terminal degree in a field related to technical theater and significant experience in both design and technical implementations of productions required. Excellent communication skills, as well as the ability to think creatively and solve problems within the time and budget constraints standard to the industry. Candidates who have experience with modern fabrication technologies and familiarity with digital media technologies will be given preferential treatment. Candidates should provide evidence of such activity with adequate documentation of productions, publications, and CAD drafting examples. Previous experience in the class and commercial productions will be considered assets.

This individual will oversee all aspects of costume construction for AU Theatre productions, working directly with faculty and guest costume designers to balance design integrity with budget constraints. The costume studio coordinator is also responsible for supervision of students engaged in costume production studios in all aspects of construction (patterning, draping, cutting, and building, tailoring, fitting and dying). Additional duties include maintenance of costume shop equipment and extensive costume storage facility, attendance at all costume fittings, supervision of student wardrobe crews, and maintenance of comprehensive technical, financial and artistic information critical to the costume design process for each production.

Entry into the applicant pool requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Costume Design or Technology, Fashion Design, or related field; extensive knowledge of costume history, construction techniques and fabrics are essential; must be proficient in all technology related to costume construction. This individual will be well organized, and have the ability to work with a variety of people. M.F.A. (Master of Fine Arts) from an accredited institution in Costume Design with experience in managing or assistant managing a costume studio in a professional or university theatre setting desired.
