Engineering Commission

Mission

The mission of the Engineering Commission is to provide a forum for the interchange of information on the engineering aspects of the entertainment industry, and to promote the advancement and practical application of technology and standards.

Goals

  • Create, design, outline, produce, and or locate educational programs, sessions, and/or classes concerning technical procedures and practices for all trades and crafts of the entertainment industry and make them available to USITT Regional Sections, Student Chapters, and other entertainment organizations;
  • Initiate projects which deal with the dissemination of equipment specifications, design, and construction, as well as Standards and Recommended Practices;
  • Work closely with other USITT Commissions, Committees, and outside industry groups including, but not limited to ESTA (the Entertainment Services and Technology Association).

Projects

USITT Standards Development: The Engineering Commission works closely with the Standards Committee which has the primary responsibility of verification that the requirements for due process, consensus, and other criteria for approval have been met in the development, revision, reaffirmation, or withdrawal of a USITT Standard, Guideline, or Recommended Practice.

DMX512: (Digital Data Transmission Standard for Dimmers and Controllers): This standard describes a method of digital data transmission between controllers and dimmers.  It covers electrical characteristics, data format, data protocol, connector type, and cable type.  It was originally developed in 1986, and revised in 1990.

NEC: The Engineering Commission is actively involved with the tri-annual revision process used to update the National Electrical Code® (NEC). Additional information concerning NEC is available on USITT's NEC page.

Qualified Stage Electrician & Stage Hand: See the ESTA Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) for more information.

Networking & Control Protocols: This topic was discussed at a session at the Annual Conference & Stage Expo in Long Beach in March 2004. The program (~1.1MB PDF) can be downloaded.
