Sightlines Reader's Guide

"Sightlines, the USITT newsletter, provides the membership with timely information and brief articles on the activities of the institute and its members; fosters communication among all constituents of the institute, the performing arts and related industries, and promotes the work of the institute."

Each issue of Sightlines contains a sequence of stories and each story is presented on its own page. The user is encouraged to scan through this sequence by using the "next story button," lingering on pages of particular interest. The loop includes the cover page, feature story pages, and pages that contain related shorter items, such as "Contributing Member News" and "Announcements." It begins with the Cover Page and ends with The Last Word, which leads back to the Cover Page. All the pages in the issue are also listed on a table of contents in the left column.

Some of the content of Sightlines does not appear in the next story loop. These include the USITT Calendar, a group of static pages, and some pages labeled "For the Record." The Calendar and Classifieds are prominently featured on the menu bar on each page in the issue.

The static pages do not change from issue to issue. These pages contain information about the Sightlines staff and publication polices, tips for readers of the online version, ways to submit items for the USITT Calendar, stories, and JobsUSITT, and the Sightlines search page. These pages can be reached from the menu bar links on every page in Sightlines.

Each page in the online version of Sightlines also provides easy access to the USITT website via its' home page and to the Conference & Stage Expo pages.

The special pages titled For the Record will be included in each online issue of Sightlines which serves as a document of record for USITT. Current and authoritative lists of officers and of distinguished members (Contributing, Sustaining, and Honorary) are updated monthly. These will not be part of the next story loop, but are listed on and can be accessed through the table of contents.

• Screen width is 720 pixels, for ease of reading on laptop and conventional sized monitors.

• Sightlines is possible to download over a phone modem, with loading time for pictures that accompany stories limited to two seconds; once the issue is cached the loop moves more quickly.

• Sightlines has been developed for the current generation of browsers, including Netscape 7, Internet Explorer 6, Opera 7, Safari 1.2, etc.

• Readable in Netscape 4.7, Internet Explorer 5, etc. although some formatting may be irregular.

• Within the text, direct links are live but e-mail links are not except for those to the staff in the USITT Office.

• Printing is possible on a page by page basis through most browsers. It may be helpful to preview before printing a page because preset margins vary in browsers. The pages in Sightlines are 7 1/2" wide and can have no more than 1/2" inch margins on each side to print on an 8 1/2" x 11" piece of paper.
