USITT has been actively involved with modifying the National Electrical
Code® through several generations of the tri-annual code revision process. The 2002 edition of the
National Electrical Code® became available in Fall 2001. A summary of the updates of interest to the
entertainment industry is available on the 2002 NEC page. The 2005 edition is
described below.
2005 Edition:
The Code Panels met in December, 2003 and considered the public comments which resulted in a publication
called a Report on Comments. All proposed changes were then voted on by the membership of the National
Fire Protection Association at their annual meeting in May 2004. The new 2005 edition of the NEC® is
now available.
2008 Edition:
The tri-annual revision process leading to the creation of the 2008 edition has completed all but final approval by the NFPA Membership and the NFPA Standards Council.
The NEC revision process began by the general public (you) submitting proposals to revise the Code. In January of 2006, the various Code
Panels met to consider these proposals and act on them (recommending acceptance in part or whole, or rejection). These actions were
published in a Report on Proposals. The general public (again you) submitted comments on the Code Panel's decisions. The Code Panels met again in
December, 2006 and considered the public comments which resulted in a Report on Comments. The 2008 edition of the NEC® will become available in the fall of 2007.
