| USITT Sets Standards for the Industry |
|
USITT supports, develops, and promotes a wide variety
of standards for the theatrical and entertainment industry.
This page provides an overview of all these activities,
links to further information about each of them, announcements about
deadlines for standards under review, and access to
other useful information. The process of creating,
reviewing, and disseminating standards cuts across
many of USITT’s
organizational lines. Most of these activities are now
led by the Standards Committee but historically some
were undertaken by the commissions, notably Engineering.
Important activity involves DMX512 and NEC.
The Standards Committee, which maintains its own roster of members, is responsible for verifying that the requirements for due process, consensus, and other criteria for approval in the development, revision, reaffirmation, or withdrawal of a USITT Standard, Guideline, or Recommended Practice have been met. The Standards Committee is also responsible for the administration of the procedures dictated by the USITT Procedures for Creating Standards ( PDF) and provides assistance to the Subcommittees created to develop standards. The list of Standards Committee Members is also provided with the other official USITT Committees.
USITT works closely with the Technical Standards Program of ESTA (the Entertainment Services and Technology Association). For example, the Draft Rigging Standards developed by USITT over the past decade are being carried through the ANSI Standards process for consensus documents by ESTA’s Rigging Working Group, and the revisions to USITT DMX512/1990 are being administered by ESTA’s Control Protocols Working Group. ESTA’s Technical Standards Committee (TSC) is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as Accredited Standards Committee E1, Safety and Compatibility of Entertainment Technical Equipment and Practices with ESTA as its Secretariat which provides administrative support to the committee. Membership in working groups is open to all who are affected by standards-making in these areas, and who are willing to actively participate in the group's projects.
