ETC (Electronic Theatre Controls, Inc.), a global leader in the visual environment technology industry is seeking a highly motivated Controls Engineer to work on our rigging products in Victor, NY. This person will be responsible for designing and documenting new motor control systems, and integrating existing control systems to comply with theatrical and/or arena motorized rigging system requirements.


Our ideal candidate will have a Technical Bachelor’s degree , 4-6 years of experience in control system design, and experience with component selection of relays, power supplies, PLC’s, HMI’s, frequency drives, reversing starters, push buttons, transformers, encoders, sensors, and switches. Candidates should have experience working with three-phase fixed and variable speed motor control systems.

Representative Responsibilities:

  • Includes all the responsibilities of Engineer I
  • Assumes design responsibility for all electrical and software portions of the projects
  • With minimal supervision, makes design modifications or improvements to existing and special projects 
  • Analyzes project problems to determine probable cause and potential solutions
  • Conducts necessary investigative work pertinent to designs 
  • May be involved in the compilation of project schedules, specifications, test plans, equipment specification, release related documentation, and other duties as assigned
  • May be involved in departmental process and quality programs
  • Should be an avid candidate for continuous improvement in control system design
  • Systems Design/Integration
  • Specify/select appropriate control systems to meet customer expectations/specifications
  • Review system specifications and assist sales/project managers in assessing customer’s needs for theatrical and live event rigging systems and related control equipment
  • Design and document complete electrical submittal packages based on existing and future control systems 
  • Develop test strategies, devices, and systems
  • Performs stress and performance tests on newly designed products
  • Set up and test controls equipment
  • Direct and perform systems level testing
  • Training – assist in providing maintenance and operator training.
  • Help manufacturing to configure systems and to optimize ease of operation
  • Research and test control equipment options
  • Commission systems – some travel to customer site. Set up and test various control systems and equipment. In rare cases assist in making electrical terminations
  • Ongoing support – troubleshoot problems over the telephone, through remote computer login or on site
  • On-call Helpdesk support; may include evenings and/or weekends
  • Consistently strive to improve designs and product quality
  • Proficiency at reading, writing, and understanding ladder logic, C, VBA and Structured Text
  • Ability to write structured programs utilizing industry standards
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Completes special projects and assignments in a positive and timely manner


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Technical Bachelor’s Degree and 4-6 years experience
  • Or Technical Masters Degree and 0-3 years experience
  • Experience with three phase motor control systems using vector drives
  • Guide entry-level engineers
  • Good group interaction skills
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrates thorough documentation skills in the development of materials used within the department or division
  • Ability to lead highly technical meetings with the customer
  • Demonstrates ability to dissect problems and assignments into manageable tasks
  • Demonstrates ability to make independent decisions
  • Demonstrates ability to systematically solve problems of moderate scope and perform root cause analysis
  • Contributes to the creation of new solutions
  • Identifies problems and begins to determine alternatives
  • Ability to design new products from conception to completion
  • Ability to accurately estimate time required to complete tasks
  • Understands and applies accepted engineering principles and practices
  • Performs the design or modification of a product, service, or process
  • Ability to program PLCs, smart relays, VFDs, HMIs, and other similar devices
  • Experience in creating, modifying, and understanding electrical schematics
  • Familiar with the application of company and industry design standards
  • Ability to travel
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record
  • Familiar with Windows operating systems and PC based hardware
  • Ability to work at heights, work from a ladder, and ability to carry ladder and/or tools from vehicle to work site
  • Knowledge of company procedures
  • Good judgment and decision making skills
