Albuquerque Little Theatre (ALT) is seeking a Full-Time Resident Designer/Technical Director capable of designing sets and lights for up to 7 shows per year.


The Resident Designer/Technical Director is responsible for all technical aspects including supervision of technical staff and volunteers. In addition, ALT is expanding and updating its facilities and is looking for its new Technical Director to be capable of assisting in the coordination of its expansion.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in technical theatre required. Extensive experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Multi-skilled with knowledge and experience in all technical fields (especially set/lighting design).
  • Comprehensive knowledge in wood and metal construction, scenic art techniques, lighting control  programming, and sound console programming/mixing. Video projection skill is a plus.
  • Proficient in CAD (Vectorworks or AutoCAD).
  • Excellent managerial and budgetary skills.
  • Able to work long days when necessary (Tech Week), lift 60 lbs, climb ladders, scaffolds, and use genie lifts.
  • Knowledge to implement safe practices in the shop, theater, and rehearsal space.
  • Basic building maintenance skills to coordinate upkeep of facilities.

Job duties include:

  • Scenic design 5 to 7 shows a year
  • Lighting design 3 to 4 shows a year.
  •  (Actual # of set and lighting designs based on budget and availability of guest designers).
  • Supervise and assist in scenic construction.
  • Supervise all technical departments.
  • Recruit, train, and mentor backstage, construction, and other technical volunteers.
  • Interview and hire guest designers and backstage staff.
  • Assist in creation and maintenance of backstage budgets.
  • Attend staff and production meetings.
  • Coordinate upkeep and maintenance of facilities.
  • Coordinate and facilitate technical aspects of theatre rentals and special events.
