2023 Summer Costume Symposium

USITT’s Costume Commission is once again hosting an in-person Summer Symposium. The popular immersion event is back in person for the first time since 2019!

Costuming the future: Exploring Maker Technologies and CLO3D Digital Patterning

This year we will be exploring the world of maker technologies and the CLO3D patterning software and how we can use these digital assets in our costume making and shop workflow.

Location: Where? hint: not virtually! The Theatre School at DePaul University, Lincoln Park Campus in Chicago Illinois. 2350 N Racine Ave, Chicago, IL 60614

Dates: July 26- 28, 2023, arrival on July 25, departure on July 29

Registration*: The cost of registration includes your track, DePaul dorm housing 7/25 - 7/29, breakfast and lunch 7/26 - 7/28, and a cocktail reception, unless you live locally and choose not to stay onsite. Parking is available onsite for an additional fee. Click here for map.

Attendees can choose between one of two tracks*. Register soon as space is limited in each class.

*Maker Technology Track 1: Software and tools for lasers cutting, Cricut/Silhouette machines, 3D printers, resin printers, LEDs for costumes. We will utilize the on-campus Makers Space and participants will cycle through a round robin of classes to cover all of the different types of machines and software. We will use the different machines to create costume pieces you can take with you.

Modules to cycle through:

  • Adobe Illustrator
  • 3D Modeling Software
  • 3D Printer/Resin Printer
  • Die Cutting Machines
  • LED’s For Costumes

*CLO3D Track 2: CLO3D. We will spend the 3 days taking a deep dive into the 3D patterning software. Participants will learn the basics of the Clo3D software and how this software can improve your workflow in the costume shop.
