The University of Iowa, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS) and Division of Performing Arts, has a Scenery Fabricator (Carpenter/Welder) position available in the Production Unit serving Dance/Opera.

This person will execute construction, finishing and rigging of scenery and props for dance, opera, and/or theatre for the Performing Arts Production Unit, producing in three venues. The shop is equipped with excellent tools, including Stagehand mechanization and a 7-head CNC router table. This is a full time Professional and Scientific position primarily 8am-5pm M-F, with occasional variance within a 40–45-hour work week. It is a 12-month appointment with career status after 2 years and includes a 10% retirement contribution with 5% employee match.

BA/BFA degree in theatrical production for theatre, dance and/or opera or equivalent educational and professional experience.

Demonstrated ability to work independently from blueprints and technical drawings with only verbal instructions from the shop supervisor, as demonstrated at a working proficiency level.

Demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately, and in a safe manner.

Working experience and demonstrable skill in scenery construction, wood structural layout and construction techniques, metal structure layout and construction techniques. Knowledge of jigs and layout procedures.

Valid driver’s license.
