Star Factory Lantern has completed a multi-site lighting and kinetic installation across cultural landmarks, theater plazas and waterfront locations in Suzhou, China. The 2026 project combines large-scale illuminated structures, internal LED systems, water reflection and mechanically animated elements to create a connected night-time visitor experience.
Rather than applying the same lighting treatment to every location, the project adapts scale, movement, surface finish and illumination to the different conditions of each site. Traditional Zigong lantern-making techniques provide the fabrication foundation, with steel frames and three-dimensional wire armatures defining the sculptural volumes. Translucent fabric, high-density satin, selected printed surfaces and hand-painted finishes are integrated with internal LED lighting to create color, depth and legibility after dark.
At Canal Theater, the principal installation serves as a large-scale arrival landmark. The composition extends approximately 32 meters overall and reaches 8 meters in height. A 1.34-meter raised platform is integrated with the existing site steps, allowing the illuminated structure to engage directly with the surrounding plaza while remaining visible from longer viewing distances.
The project shifts to a more intimate and kinetic scale at North Pier, where a 4-meter-diameter, 4-meter-high illuminated carousel is mounted on an electrically driven base. The system allows the installation to rotate through 360 degrees, introducing continuous movement into the waterfront route and changing the composition as visitors move around it.
Water becomes part of the lighting environment at Broken Bridge and Shantang Phase IV. The Broken Bridge installation measures approximately 15 meters long and 3 meters high, using reflected light to extend the apparent depth of the illuminated forms across the water surface. At Shantang, an approximately 8-meter-long and 4-meter-high installation incorporates a central lotus with a breathing-light effect, creating a slower visual rhythm along the waterfront.
The project’s most theatrical combination of lighting and mechanical movement appears at Tiger Hill. An approximately 12-meter-long and 5-meter-high floral tiger gateway establishes an illuminated threshold leading into the “Blooming Step by Step” installation, which reaches about 10 meters at its highest point.
Here, lighting and movement are layered into the handcrafted lantern structures. Suzhou embroidery-inspired flowing edge light and a waterfall-style lighting sequence create continuous motion across the composition. Five flowers within a field of 50 use mechanical opening systems, while moving butterfly wings and blinking character eyes add smaller animated details that reward closer viewing.
Lighting systems are coordinated according to the scale and operating requirements of each site. Canal Theater and North Pier use 24V internal LED systems, while the Broken Bridge, Shantang and Tiger Hill installations use 220V LED systems. Structural fabrication, illuminated surfaces and kinetic components were developed together so that lighting and movement could be integrated into the physical installation rather than added as separate effects.
Across the different sites, the project uses lighting to establish hierarchy and pacing. Large illuminated forms act as long-distance visual markers, waterfront reflections expand the perceived scale of the installations, and kinetic details introduce time-based changes at closer viewing distances.
The result is a multi-site night-time experience in which traditional lantern fabrication is combined with contemporary lighting and kinetic systems to create landmarks, thresholds and animated public-space environments across Suzhou.
