Immersive Design Labs Joins AES Boston Chapter To Explore Immersive Recording At Do No Harm Studios

Leicester, MA — Immersive Design Labs (IDL), a pioneer in immersive sound capture through its 7.0.4 Immersive Capture Array and omnidirectional microphones, will join the Audio Engineering Society (AES) Boston Chapter for a special evening exploring the art, acoustics, and technology of live immersive music capture at Do No Harm Studios on Thursday, September 24, from 6:00–9:30 p.m.

Located just outside Worcester, Massachusetts, the newly opened Do No Harm Studios features a 23' x 27' x 18' variable-acoustic recording space designed to make the room itself an integral part of the recording process. At the center of the facility is a complete IDL 7.0.4 Immersive Capture Array, alongside a vintage Steinway D concert grand piano, DW drum kit, and full Ex Machina Dolby Atmos monitoring system.

The evening will pair technical discussion with an informal listening session, giving recording engineers, producers, educators, students, and musicians an opportunity to explore the studio and exchange ideas about immersive recording.

The evening will also introduce the “Bud Lift,” a remotely controlled system that provides variable vertical positioning of the complete IDL 7.0.4 array. Working with the studio’s variable acoustics, the system allows engineers to adjust the height of the overhead microphones relative to the room and recording source, including the drum kit, grand piano, solo performers, and ensembles.

Attendees will hear recordings captured with the IDL system and played back in the studio’s Dolby Atmos monitoring environment. The demonstrations will show how microphone placement, array height, room acoustics, and the natural interaction between musicians and the room shape the sound.
