Technical Director
The Carson Center for the Performing Arts

Overview
The Technical Director is responsible for all technical and production elements of performances and events at The Carson Center. This role manages lighting, sound, rigging, and stage equipment to maintain seamless operations, uphold high production standards, and guarantee safety compliance. The Technical Director leads the production staff and stagehands, liaises with visiting performers and touring teams, and provides technical support for both professional and community events.

Key Responsibilities
• Technical Operations
Oversee lighting, sound, rigging, and stage management; ensure all systems are correctly installed, operated, and maintained.
• Production Planning
Develop technical schedules, event plans, and production timelines to ensure seamless execution. Coordinate load-ins, rehearsals, sound checks, and load-outs.
• Budgeting & Estimates
Prepare labor and production cost estimates to inform show budgets and contract offers. Manage the technical department’s annual budget, track expenses, and advise on capital and upgrade projects.
• Safety & Compliance
Conduct pre-load-in safety briefings; enforce safety protocols throughout events. Maintain compliance with industry standards and ADA accessibility requirements.
• Equipment & Inventory
Oversee inventory management, routine maintenance, and repair of all technical gear. Keep stage, storage, and access areas organized and efficient.
• Staff Leadership
Create and manage staffing schedules, delegate tasks to stagehands and production crews, and optimize labor costs. Foster clear communication across production, front-of-house, and administrative teams.
• Client & Tour Relations
Serve as the primary technical liaison for touring productions and rental clients. Advance and fulfill technical riders and requirements.
• Technical Support
Operate lighting, sound, or video systems as needed. Maintain and update all technical documentation, including the venue’s tech packet.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theater, Sound Design, or a related field preferred; equivalent professional experience will be considered.
• Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in technical direction, theatrical production, or venue operations within a performing arts center, theater, or production company.
• ETCP (Entertainment Technician Certification Program) certification and other relevant industry credentials are strongly preferred.
• Proficiency in stage lighting, audio engineering, rigging, and stage management.
• Strong leadership and project management skills with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
• Proficient in reading and interpreting technical riders, stage plots, and production diagrams.
• Exceptional organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to multitask and thrive in fast-paced, high-pressure environments.

Physical Requirements
• Must be able to lift, push, or pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds using appropriate tools or equipment.
• Comfortable working in confined spaces, at heights, near loud or flashing effects, and in various environmental conditions, including outdoors.
• Stamina and flexibility to work long or irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
