The Department of Theatre at Arkansas State University invites applications for a Full-Time Temporary Instructor of Theatre in Lighting and Sound Design. This is a 9-month teaching appointment for the 2025-2026 academic year.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Teaching a 4/4 load, which typically includes one academic course, two laboratory sections, and serving as the lighting and sound designer for two productions each semester. Possible courses are Sound Design, Lighting Design, Principles of Stage Design, and Fine Arts Theatre (part of the General Education Humanities curriculum).
- Serving as the Head Electrician and Audio Engineer for departmental productions.
- Creating lighting plots, instrument schedules, channel lists, and programming lighting consoles.
- Developing sound designs, including recording, editing, mixing, and programming playback software.
- Maintaining inventory for all lighting and sound equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Supervising and training student crews in lighting and sound design and technology.
- Mentoring and supervising student designers.
- Being available for student supervision during evening and weekend rehearsals and performances.
- Occasionally transporting materials and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds with or without assistance.
- Working collegially and collaboratively with students and faculty.
Expectations for minimum qualifications are as follows:
- M.F.A. in Lighting Design, Sound Design, or a closely related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Demonstrated proficiency in both lighting and sound design for theatrical productions.
- Experience with digital and analog sound reinforcement devices and consoles.
- Knowledge of OSHA and industry safety compliance standards.
