Get to Know USITT’s New Director of Finance Fran Taylor

October 19, 2021

USITT has welcomed a new Director of Finance to the National Office team — Fran Taylor, CPA. We chatted with Fran about her previous work, hobbies, and her relationship with the arts industry. Help us welcome Fran by getting to know her through our Q&A below!

Where are you from?

I was born, raised, and educated in New York City.  After graduating college, I moved to Virginia Beach for 20 years and then to Alexandria in Northern Virginia.

Where did you work prior to USITT and what was your role?

I have served in financial leadership roles for several non-profit organizations during my career. My last role was as the Controller of a land conservation organization in Washington DC.

Where will you be working from?

My remote office is currently in Alexandria, VA, but I am currently house hunting in Virginia Beach/Chesapeake to move closer to my siblings and other family.

Why did you accept the offer to work at USITT?

I grew up in NYC and was a huge fan of Broadway theatre.  When I saw an opportunity to connect with the technology involved in putting on such brilliant productions, I was intrigued. Then I met David – we discussed forming a partnership to provide him with financial guidance and support as he leads USITT. I knew I had the knowledge and experience to form a successful partnership with him; I met other members of the Team and my thoughts were confirmed. I also considered this a great fit for me and for where I am currently in my career.

What are you most looking forward to about your new position?

Being able to collaborate with my colleagues to enhance financial processes to add efficiencies to our work. Also, learning more about the work involved in theatre design and technology.

What are your duties in this position?

My main duties include:

  • Providing oversight of the day-to-day financial operations.
  • Maintaining effective internal controls.
  • Providing transparent financial reporting to our Executive Director, Board, and other stakeholders.
  • Applying best practices when establishing accounting policies and procedures.

What experience with the arts and live entertainment do you bring to your role?

I served as a consultant and auditor to an organization that annually produced a live musical festival event.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to read, watch movies (BIG Betty Davis and Joan Crawford fan), take walks, and enjoy nature.

Tell us about your family

I have two young adult daughters and I am also the “Glam-Ma” to my daughter’s cat, Laci.

What would you like to say to the USITT membership as the new Director of Finance?

Some of you have already reached out to welcome me and again I say thank you. I am really excited about this opportunity, and I look forward to working with you; please do not hesitate to reach out if you believe I can support your efforts toward the work of USITT.
