Summary

The James Madison University School of Theatre and Dance (STAD) seeks a Costume Shop Manager. This full-time position will supervise the execution of departmental productions while overseeing the management and maintenance of the costume shop and its related spaces (e.g., dressing rooms) and equipment.

The School of Theatre and Dance serves 260 majors and offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance, Theatre, and Musical Theatre. It emphasizes collaboration and artistic excellence as part of the CVPA’s student-centered learning community. Housed in the award-winning Forbes Center for the Performing Arts, the School fosters a collegial environment toward providing practice-based training within a liberal arts tradition. STAD presents a robust season during both the academic year and summer while working across disciplines within the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of the costume shop toward creating a positive working environment lending to meaningful educational experiences for STAD students.
• Develop and manage costume shop budgets and initiatives.
• Participate in costume construction and/or acquisition for all STAD productions.
• Maintain and organize the school’s costume storage space, corresponding inventory, related equipment, and costume-construction materials.
• Collaborate with the Forbes Center staff in scheduling use of costume spaces and equipment.
• Collaborate with production-costume designers and assisting in the execution of their vision.
• Mentor students and support guest artists.
• Participate in university, production, committee, and STAD meetings as required.
• Non-standard work schedule including evenings and weekends is expected. A typical week is 40 hours. No work is permitted during university closures.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
• Demonstrated previous experience in patterning and construction skills in building and maintaining costumes
• Experience as a costume shop manager or assistant costume shop manager
• Strong communication and personnel management skills

Additional Considerations:
• Experience as a costume, make-up, wig/hair and/or crafts designer
• Experience working in educational settings
