Hughston Engineering UVC Machines
Hughston Engineering in South San Francisco, CA has begun to manufacture UVC decontamination units for use in the entertainment industry. Their current plan is to lease these at around $150/week. They cost about $2800 to manufacture.
UVC refers to ultraviolet light with wavelengths between 200 – 280 nanometers (nm). Light in the UVC wavelength can be used for disinfecting water, sterilizing surfaces, destroying harmful micro-organisms in food products and in air.
These units are made with consideration to keep users safe while using the machines and to kill the virus in a matter of seconds. The efficacy of the unit is based on intensity and proximity. Both are calculated for this application.
The Local 16 Training Trust was given a Beta sample of the machine to use in the training facility. It has been used to decontaminate wireless mics, cell phones, keyboards, gloves, masks and myriad other items used in the video teaching studio. There have been no ill effects to any of the gear used in the machine.

The Long Runway to Return: The Role of Anchor Cultural Institutions

As we look forward, we must reimagine how we connect with people (artists, employees, board members, partners, audiences and communities), redesign programs and services, and reinvent business models. Along the way we must also reframe our place in community, serve as anchor institutions, and shift perspectives from beneficiary of recovery to partner in recovery.
In just a few short weeks, the COVID-19 health crisis has had an unprecedented impact on our world-wide economy and social environment. In this paper, we describe a five-stage framework: focusing on resilience, readiness, reimagination, recapitalization, and return.
Because arts venues were the first to close and may be among the last to re-open, a myriad of issues may emerge; from the time and conditions required to restart ‘the art’ to customer willingness to be in large venues; from the economic impact of closure to the necessary resources (leadership, human and financial) to return.
There will be much change in the arts and culture space in the coming months. It is a real opportunity for anchor cultural institutions to evolve and step into more significant community development and public value roles.
Over the next weeks and months, AMS will continue to document and share examples of this evolution. We welcome your stories about innovative and creative examples of the public value of our sector and look forward to continuing the conversation. Look for future updates.

Ohio State University used BlackTrax as part of the lighting and media design for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time in an intimate theatre space. This webinar will demonstrate how to integrate automation seamlessly into your design process.
The webinar taking place on May 20 at 2 p.m. EDT will be hosted by Alex Oliszewski, Assistant Professor of Media Design for the Department of Theatre at Ohio State University, who has a joint appointment between the Department of Theatre and the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD).
Alex is also the co-author of "Digital Media, Projection, & Technology for Theatre", which covers the foundational skills, best practices and real-world considerations of integrating digital media projections into theatre. ETC and High End Systems Turn Focus to Education
Earlier this month, the companies announced that all the online classes on their LearningStage platform would be free until May 15. Last week, the new educational website Study Hall was launched. Located via users’ MyETC account, the new page includes both curated and new content, including tailored articles and videos as well as links to helpful content. ETC is excited to add new live events to the offerings.
The live webinars, roundtables, and Q&As will be led by both employee experts and members around the industry with global content geared toward all ETC and High End users, including several events in other languages. ChamSys Expands Training Academy, Adds Weekly Live MagicQ and Multi-Language Material
ChamSys continues to build on its global commitment to education, making webinar bookings and 20-minute appointment consultations found on the training page available in German, Italian, and Spanish versions. The company has also broadened the scope of its training with the addition of new Live MagicQ sessions that will stream every Tuesday at 11 am EDT (4 pm BST).

Woza Africa: Theatre in the African Context is a free digital education resource designed for secondary schools, drama/ theatre groups or interested individuals who may want to use it, especially with the current challenges of home schooling.
The Toolkit was designed by one of the African Theatre Association (AfTA) members, Prof. Yvette Hutchison, to introduce teachers, theatre groups and students anywhere in the world to a wide range of African approaches to storytelling, historical and cultural frames of reference, and ways of being in the world.
